Kane is proof of the Tipton Harriers system: a junior-ranks athlete now training in Andy Bentley’s senior squad, consistently turning up, racing hard and starting to get noticed well beyond the Tipton circle.

Author’s comment

Kane is an ever-present in training sessions. Even when under the weather, he is there to support his training partners.

He has a supportive family around him, enabling him to attend training, racing and group runs. His attitude and work ethic are glowing testament to his mom and dad.

His results this year are starting to raise eyebrows. Kane won the opening Sexarathon Series race at Lilleshall over 5 miles, pulling away from a strong, experienced field to take the win convincingly in 25:29 — one of the fastest times ever recorded there.

He currently leads the series, despite it not being his number one focus this summer, and looks on track to take the series title. At Mid-Cheshire 5K he clocked a new PB of 15:05.

Kane will be looking to make a serious dent in his track times over this summer. Watch this space.

Story

“First time I qualified for Mini Marathon I was buzzing.”

He has had times where he dropped out of sessions and races, but grafting and pushing through pain helped him move forward.

“I wouldn’t be as recognised in the running scene as I am now without Tipton Harriers.”

Goals

Get the 5K down as close to 14:00 as possible, while sharpening the shorter events while the speed is still there.

Long term: succeed, help others, and chase the biggest dream — becoming an Olympic champion.

Training week

Monday, Wednesday and Sunday are easy runs, with Sunday usually longer.

Tuesday and Thursday are club nights. Saturday is parkrun, solo/group session or an easy run. Friday is normally rest day.

Sessions

Favourite: 16 × 400m off 60 seconds — simple and effective.

Least favourite: 30–40 minute thresholds around Ball Park. In Kane’s words: “drags so much.”

Author’s note

Mikey joined Tipton Harriers in 2016. He was not ripping up races at an early age; for years he was a solid runner, often finishing in the 50s in the West Midlands Young Athletes League.

What stood out was his toughness. During Covid he took part in the adult corona runs and his positive attitude started to raise eyebrows. He could dig deep in sessions and races, even before the results fully arrived.

As he grew older his form improved. Training with the senior group, he was not content sitting in: he pushed the pace at the front. He and Tom Bentley, now also on an athletics scholarship in the States, became strong training partners.

After a period of injury, Mikey is now pushing his PBs to new levels with 3:50.55 for 1500m and 14:47 for 5000m on the track this year — with more likely to come by the end of the summer.

Running story

Michael has been running for 11 years. He first enjoyed racing through primary school cross country, before teacher Mr Neil encouraged him to join Tipton Harriers to develop further.

Tipton helped him connect with like-minded people and develop the intrinsic motivation that now drives his training.

His proudest moment so far is earning a scholarship to run in college in America.

Tough period

In April 2025 he picked up a quad strain during an already frustrating season and was out for nine weeks.

He got through it by focusing on rehabilitation and recovery, keeping himself occupied mentally and trusting the process.

Goals

Next 6–12 months: qualify for national championships over 1500m and have a successful cross country season.

Long term: make regular national championship appearances, compete amongst the best in the country, earn money running, sign professionally and represent GB internationally.

Training week

Monday double run, Tuesday double workout, Wednesday midweek long run, Thursday recovery run, Friday workout and double, Saturday long run, Sunday recovery run.

Favourite session: 12 × 300m — short, sweet and fast. Least favourite: any kind of long tempo.

Inspiration & quick fire

Michael names Steve Prefontaine and Andreas Almgren as inspirational athletes. At Tipton, Andy Bentley helped him take the next step as a junior and Tom Holden gave valuable advice that helped him progress in the 1500m.

His advice to anyone thinking of joining Tipton Harriers Endurance is simple: utilise the experienced members as much as you can.
